1Understand ratios

A ratio compares two quantities in a stated order. Simplify by dividing both parts by the same factor.

Worked example12 red : 8 blue = 3 : 2

Red to blue is 3:2. Red to all beads is 12:20 = 3:5. The order and the whole matter.

2Find a unit rate

A unit rate tells you how much for one item or one unit. Divide the total by the number of units.

Worked exampleRM20 ÷ 5 notebooks = RM4 per notebook

For speed: 42 km ÷ 3 hours = 14 km/h. Always include what the rate measures.

3Equivalent ratios

Multiply or divide both parts by the same number to keep a ratio equivalent.

Worked example2 : 3 = 4 : 6 = 8 : 12

A recipe with 2 cups flour for 3 cups oats needs 8 cups flour for 12 cups oats.

4Share in a ratio

Add the ratio parts, divide the total by that sum, then multiply by each part.

Worked example40 ÷ (3 + 5) = 5 per part

For red:blue = 3:5, red = 3 × 5 = 15 and blue = 5 × 5 = 25.
