Rational Number Operations
Use long division, decimal operations, and division of fractions.
1Long division
Divide, multiply, subtract, and bring down the next digit. Keep each quotient digit in its place.
65 ÷ 28 gives 2, remainder 9. Bring down 5: 95 gives 3, remainder 11. Bring down 2: 112 gives 4. Check: 234 × 28 = 6552.
2Add and subtract decimals
Line up the decimal points. Add zeros when useful, then regroup as with whole numbers.
20.40 − 7.86 = 12.54. Estimate first: about 20 − 8 = 12, so the result is reasonable.
3Multiply and divide decimals
For multiplication, count decimal places. For division, multiply both numbers by the same power of ten to make the divisor whole.
7.56 ÷ 0.6 = 75.6 ÷ 6 = 12.6. Moving both decimal points keeps the quotient the same.
4Divide fractions
Keep the first fraction, change division to multiplication, and use the reciprocal of the second fraction.
9/8 = 1 1/8. For mixed numbers, convert to improper fractions first; simplify the final answer.
