1Percent means per hundred

Convert a decimal to a percent by multiplying by 100. Convert a percent to a decimal by dividing by 100.

Worked example0.35 = 35%; 18% = 0.18

3/4 = 75/100 = 75%. Also, 40% = 40/100 = 2/5.

2Find a percentage of an amount

Write the percentage as a decimal, then multiply by the whole amount.

Worked example15% of 80 = 0.15 × 80 = 12

You can also find 10% (8) and 5% (4), then add. To find a percentage, divide part by whole and multiply by 100.

3Discounts

A discount reduces the original price. Calculate the discount amount, then subtract it.

Worked example25% of RM120 = RM30 discount

Sale price = RM120 − RM30 = RM90. A 25% discount means you pay 75% of the original price.

4Taxes and tips

Tax and tips add to the price. Check which amount the percentage is based on, especially after a discount.

Worked exampleRM50 + 6% tax = RM50 + RM3 = RM53

A 15% tip on RM80 is RM12. For RM200 with 10% off then 5% tax: RM180 × 1.05 = RM189.
