1Using Parentheses ( )

Parentheses show which part of the expression to do first.

Example:
8 ร— (3 + 2)
  1. Do the operation inside the parentheses3 + 2 = 5
  2. Then multiply8 ร— 5 = 40

2Using Brackets [ ]

Brackets work the same way as parentheses.

Example:
6 + [10 โˆ’ 4]
  1. Do the operation inside the brackets10 โˆ’ 4 = 6
  2. Then add6 + 6 = 12

3Using Braces { }

Braces also show which part to do first.

Example:
15 โˆ’ {7 + 3}
  1. Do the operation inside the braces7 + 3 = 10
  2. Then subtract15 โˆ’ 10 = 5

4Combining ( ), [ ], { }

When an expression has more than one type, work from the inside out.

Example:
4 ร— [2 + {6 โˆ’ 1}]
  1. Do inside the braces6 โˆ’ 1 = 5
  2. Do inside the brackets2 + 5 = 7
  3. Then multiply4 ร— 7 = 28
