Decimals Place Value
& Operations
Read, write, compare, add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to the hundredths place.
1Place value of decimals
Each digit in a decimal has a place value.
| Ones | Tenths | Hundredths |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 4 | 2 |
In 3.42,
3 is in the ones place, 4 is in the tenths place, and 2 is in the hundredths place.
2Compare decimals
Compare the digits from left to right.
Both numbers have 0 ones. In the tenths place, 7 is greater than 5, so 0.75 > 0.57.
1.20 and 1.2 are equal. Adding a zero at the end does not change the value.
3Add and subtract decimals
Line up the decimal points. Then add or subtract as you would with whole numbers.
Addition
+ 2.406.75
Line up the decimal points. 4.35 + 2.40 = 6.75
Subtraction
− 3.254.55
Line up the decimal points. 7.80 − 3.25 = 4.55
4Multiply and divide decimals
You can multiply or divide decimals by whole numbers.
Multiplication
Think: 6 tenths × 4 = 24 tenths, which is 2.4.
Division
Think: 36 tenths ÷ 9 = 4 tenths, which is 0.4.
